Sinner Through to Semifinal Without Dropping a Set

Jannik Sinner is playing in Umag for the second time in his young career. In 2019, an 18 year old skinny kid had caught of the attention of the Croatians with a three set victory against Pedro Sousa in the first round.

Despite his second round defeat to Aljaz Bedene in 2019, the crowd already knew they saw a future star. Two years later, Sinner returned to Umag as the world number 10.

Sinner received a bye in the first round as he is seeded number two. He faced a tricky second round match against Jaume Munar but was able win in straight sets with a very strong net game.

The Italian faced another in form Spaniard in Roberto Carballes Baena and won in straight sets in a much more difficult encounter, Sinner came through 6-4, 7-6(5).

The 20 year old is 33-9 on all surfaces this year and arrived in Umag having made a spectacular quarterfinal run in Wimbledon. With a victory against Franco Agamenone, he is vying for his first ATP final in this calendar year.

Agamenone Having A Break Through Tournament

Franco Agamenone has won five matches in a row to reach his first semifinal at the ATP tour level, and has done so after coming through the qualifiers.

This is a major break through moment for the Italian and will improve his ranking further after already sitting on a career high rank of 136.

Agamenone has been knocking on the door of the Tour level after posting abnormal numbers at the challenger level in the past 18 months. In fact in 2021, he had 60 clay wins across the futures and challenger level.

The Italian has won four of his five matches as a heavy underdog. He defeated Norbert Gombos in the second qualifier, Laslo Djere in the first round, Sebastian Baez in the second round and 2018 Umag champion Marco Cecchinato in the quarterfinal.

Agamenone is playing the best tennis of his life and has nothing to lose in this semifinal against his compatriot. His return of serve and net game are extremely good and something he could use to rattle Sinner.

Sinner v Agamenone Prediction and Tip

Sinner is the clear favourite here, however he hasn’t really hit his highest gear yet and facing Agamenone in this moment is a slightly tricky task. Expect Sinner to win, but it will come through a difficult challenge presented by Agamenone.
