Fabio Fognini is not playing very good tennis and the Italian admitted recently that his career is coming to a close. Fognini admitted as much in Hamburg saying that he’s mostly enjoying playing as much as he can because he knows that it won’t last too much longer.
The Italian has played lacklustre tennis all season long so his recent struggles are not a surprise. The record paints a clear picture 15-16 and it’s not going to get that much better for him especially as we move to the hard courts. He has a negative career record on the surface and he didn’t play that well on it last year.
The last two events for Fognini both came on the red dirt and in both of them, he did better in the doubles. Perpahs the Italian is already thinking about moving to the doubles circuit because he did far better there than in singles recently.
He got a decent draw in Los Cabos and perhaps that might spark a solid run in Mexico.

Berankis Doing Solid Work
Ricardas Berankis is having a pretty solid year overall with a 16-11 record and a positive record on hard courts as well. The Lithuanian player is capable of playing some solid tennis as he likes to attack and generally does it rather well.
He doesn’t have too many consistency woes but rather a cap on his talent that gets him beaten against strong players that take the matchup seriously. Recent form has been somewhat shaky from him as he lost a couple of matches in a row.
He played the Hamburg qualifiers and after winning one match, he lost the next but still got into the main draw. In the main draw he lost to Andrey Rublev and then he made his way to Atlanta. There he played the qualifiers again and lost again.
It’s been shaky lately but Fognini is a player he can beat and having a 0-3 H2H so far could be motivating for him.
Fognini v Berankis Prediction and Tip
So the Italian won all three previous matchups but they came a very long time ago. Since then his play has gotten quite a bit worse and that will make things interesting.
Fognini will be favoured and should be favoured but Berankis can win this match if he truly plays well. He’s not playing well at the moment so that will be questionable but I think he’ll do it.
