Brandon Nakashima v Max Purcell Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Nakashima and Purcell.

Nakashima Steers Clear of Uchida

A quarterfinalist at the Atlanta Open last week, Nakashima had come into this competition in Los Cabos with some rhythm going. And while he made a slow start to his opener against Kaichi Uchida, the American cruised to a straight-set win in the end.

Nakashima registered a 7-6 (1), 6-2 victory in his opener, needing nearly two hours to get past his opponent.

It was Uchida who drew first blood when he broke Nakashima in the fifth game but once the American had gotten the better of his lower-ranked opponent’s serve in the very next game, there was no looking back for him.

The world number 61 then missed on a couple of set-points on his opponent’s serve, saved four break-points of his own before taking the opening set with ease in a tie-breaker.

The second set was an easier go for Nakashima, who broke his opponent twice to take a 4-0 lead and then finished off the encounter off his third match-point.

Qualifier Purcell Scrapes Past Laaksonen

Having made it through to the main draw with straight-set wins over his two opponents, Purcell went into his opening round encounter against Henri Laaksonen as a 9/20 favourite.

And while he did need three sets to get past his Swiss opponent, Purcell lived up to that favourites tag as he completed a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win in two hours and four minutes.

Purcell, who had won just one main draw match before this victory the whole of this season, did not have too many difficulties in the first set as he broke his opponent once in the sixth game to wrap it up. He didn’t face a single break-point there.

It was in the second that Laaksonen came into his own with a break of serve while saving the only break-point he faced, before it turned out to be a deluge of breaks in the final set.

Purcell went 3-0 up in the final set before dropping his serve in the seventh game only to exchange two more breaks of serves. With Laaksonen serving to stay in the match at 4-5, Purcell broke him to love to complete the final rites and set up this meeting with Nakashima.

Nakashima v Purcell Prediction and Tip

Nakashima is an overwhelming favourite here and we expect him to complete an easy, straight-set win.
