Maria Sakkari v Shelby Rogers Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these players and Rogers has won both times.
In the first which came about at Wimbledon last year, Rogers registered a straight-set victory and then made it two wins in a row against Sakkari earlier this year in Adelaide when she scraped to a three-set win.

It’s been a good year for Sakkari so far even if it’s not seen her add to her one WTA career title. After all, the Greek number one has climbed up to her career-best ranking of number three in the world, following a consistent showing throughout the season.
Barring a 4-4 record on clay, which is clearly not Sakkari’s most preferred surface, she has performed rather well in all other conditions but more so on indoor and outdoor hard court surfaces.
On them, she has won 16 and lost just six of the matches which includes making it to the final of two tournaments – the St. Petersburg Open and the Indian Wells Open. Anett Kontaveit and Iga Swiatek got the better of her at those two.
And here in San Jose, Sakkari kick-starts her campaign with a second round match against a player who has beaten her twice following an opening bye.

Rogers Shocks Andreescu in Opener
Having won just one of her previous five matches at the highest level and coming up against a former US Open winner Bianca Andreescu, Rogers was a second-favourite going into that match by some distance. Some bookmakers had pegged her at 11/5 to surprise her Canadian opponent.
And surprise is exactly what she did as Rogers romped to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Andreescu to set up this second round meeting with Sakkari.
Rogers faced three break-points in the entire match and saved each one of them while breaking Andreescu thrice from the eight opportunities she had.
And where she scored over her opponent was her services games which saw her win 76% of the first serve points but more vitally, a whopping 68% of the second.
