Auger-Aliassime Sees Off a Spirited Hernandez

Second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime came back from a break down twice in the second set, before finally seeing off a spirited challenge from local hope Alex Hernandez on Wednesday.

The World No. 9 was in control of the first set, saving the only break point that he faced and converting the only one that he held. But the Canadian faced a stiff challenge in the second from the World No. 521. Hernandez had built a 2-5 lead in the second set, but couldn’t close out the set as Auger-Aliassime won five games in a row to complete a 6-3, 7-5 victory.

The win on his Los Cabos debut improved Auger-Aliassime to 31-17 this season. It also ended a three-match losing streak for the Canadian, who had lost his opening matches at Wimbledon and in Newport following his quarterfinal exit in Halle.

Auger-Aliassime will be featuring in a quarterfinal for the 10th time this season. He reached back-to-back finals at the Rotterdam and Marseille Opens, winning his first-ever ATP title in the former and finishing runner-up in the latter.

The Australian Open quarterfinalist reached one more semifinal in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Can he reach his fourth semifinal of the season with a win on Thursday?

Johnson Rallies Past Kokkinakis

World No. 92 Steve Johnson bounced back after dropping the first set to edge past Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round on Wednesday.

After squandering four break points, including a set point, in the opening set, which he lost in the tiebreak, Johnson made a solid come back in the second set. He broke the Aussie early and then protected the advantage to force the decider.

Johnson broke Kokkinakis in the first game of the third set as well, but this time the World No. 75 broke back in the eighth game to stay on serve. Johnson responded immediately though by  breaking for a second time in the set and then he closed out the match in the next game for a 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-4 win in two hours and 48 minutes.

The victory followed Johnson’s first round win over Argentinian lucky loser Gonzalo Villanueva.

Thanks to the two wins the 32-year-old American is 13-11 in 2022 and will be competing in a second quarterfinal this season. He had made it to the last eight in Newport following a second round walkover.
