Simona Halep v Donna Vekic Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these players and Halep has won both in straight sets.
At the first at the 2013 US Open, Halep dropped just three games in her pounding of Vekic before winning 6-4, 6-1 in their second meeting at the 2017 Indian Wells.

Halep hadn’t looked very good on court in her Washington Open second round match against Anna Kalinskaya and trailing by a set, she finally threw in the towel.
That issue, however, looked to be a minor one with Halep now returning within a week to take to court for her opener at the Rogers Cup.
The former world number one will look to inch forward with her form, having made it to the semifinal at both, Bad Homburg and Wimbledon. While the disappointment of not having gone the distance at Wimbledon would be right up there, Halep’s 32-10 record for the season puts her at the 13th spot for the Race to Finals.

Vekic Struggles Continue as She Loses Qualifier
That Vekic has made it to the main draw is down to the withdrawal of Shelby Rogers who had made it to the final last week and had no fuel left in her tank to feature in this competition.
As a result, Vekic, who had lost her second qualifying round, has managed to enter the first round here but now has a gigantic task of getting past an in-form Halep.
Vekic hasn’t quite been her self on court for a while now, her days as a top 20 players long behind her at the moment. This was exemplified by her loss in the qualifiers to Asia Muhammad despite having come into the encounter as a 2/5 favourite to grab the encounter.
Against Halep, Vekic will need to hope her opponent hasn’t quite recovered from her fitness issues and play at a much higher level than she did in the qualifiers to have a chance.
