Madison Keys had a very strong start to the year playing some amazing tennis in Australia. She did not follow it up with much after that run with her tennis suffering from a lot of inconsistency. It’s nothing new for Keys because she’s a tremendous talent when she hits her peak but it comes so rarely.
20-12 is the score this year with a 15-7 record on hard courts. It’s her best surface and her favourite part of the season is coming up. It’s not unthinkable for Keys to find a very high level during these weeks because the conditions do suit her really well.
Last year was a bad one for Keys and she’s certainly playing with a lot more confidence this year. That’s a crucial part of her game because she does doubt herself quite a bit when things go wrong. Her return in San Jose was mixed result-wise.
She won her first match against Zhang but bowed down against Jabeur in round two. The draw was good so she’ll be looking to start off with a win in Toronto.

Qualifiers’ Brilliance from Muhammad
Asia Muhammad is mostly known as a very solid doubles player but in the past year, the American has been focusing very hard on singles. It’s proving the right choice as she is playing better and better and her result in Canada proves it.
Moving up to the top 200 allowed her to enter the qualifiers here and she played two very solid matches to beat two solid players. First, it was a straight-set win over Andrea Petkovic and then it was another solid win over Croatian Donna Vekic.
It was a good start to her North American campaign because strong showings here could move her up in the rankings even more. The conditions suit her well as she has a powerful serve and likes to from the baseline. A lot will depend on the serve and if she can keep it at a high level she’ll be in matches.
Muhammad is 22-9 on the year and 18-2 on hard courts. Most of those came against lesser players but she will feel confident with those numbers.
Keys v Muhammad Prediction and Tip
So this is a matchup that obviously falls onto Keys’ racquet. If she is able to play her game she will win the match because there is very little that Muhammad can do to her from the baseline.
Muhammad could serve well and keep it close which is a solid tactic as she will force Keys to risk more. I think, whatever happens, Keys will find a way to win.
