Kyrgios Stuns World No.1

Kyrgios is in the kind of form that suggests he could very easily have been a top-10 player, and the way he is going it wouldn’t be long before he reaches that milestone. In the second round here, he gave another reason to suggest the aforementioned as the Aussie took out Daniil Medvedev, the world number one.

In a match lasting exactly two hours, Kyrgios registered a 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2 victory over his Russian opponent to advance to the third round. This is his joint-best performance in Canada.

Such was Kyrgios’ serving he faced just two break-points in the entire match and saved both of them with aplomb.

Medvedev did manage to hold his serve in the opening set and take it in a tie-breaker but as his game began to slip away, Kyrgios broke him once in the second and then earned himself five break-points in the third of which he utilised two.

This win brings Kyrgios’ tally to 15 wins from the previous 16 matches with Novak Djokovic being the only player having defeated him.

de Minaur Sends Out Dimitrov

Those were two very difficult sets and de Minaur did take his time but in the end managed to take down Grigor Dimitrov in the second round of this competition.

De Minaur, who was earlier a 7-5, 7-6 (4) winner against Denis Shapovalov in the first round of Canadian Open 2022, edged Dimitrov aside with a similar scoreline. He won 7-6 (4), 7-5 in two hours and four minutes.

The first set went to serve with neither player offering the other any break-point chances either. De Minaur clinched it in a tie-breaker but then lost his serve in the very first game of the second.

The Aussie fought back to level it 1-1 and then both players saved a handful of break-points before de Minaur broke Dimitrov in the 12th game of the set as he served to stay in the match.

Against a rampaging Kyrgios, it would be this fighting capabilities that de Minaur will need to continue showing if he wants to make an impression.
