Bianca Andreescu v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Andreescu Outlasts Cornet

Bianca Andreescu, current World No. 53, former world number four, is among the dark horses in this year’s Canadian Open. As the 2019 champion, she has an excellent chance to repeat the feat.

She last played in San Jose, where she lost in the first round to Shelby Rogers. The transition to hard courts may be tricky, but if her opening matches in Toronto are any indication, that is really not a concern.

Andreescu dispatched the reigning Silicon Valley Classic champion Daria Kasatkina 7-6(5), 6-4 to fire warning shots. Having ousted an in-form player like her, her confidence is bound to have shot up. She followed this with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Alize Cornet.

A lot will also depend on her fitness and form; after battling with injury and the subsequent recovery for the first three months of the season, the 22-year-old Canadian returned to the tour in Stuttgart and has since spent time rebuilding her form.

As a result, she is 12-8 so far with a bag of mixed results. Her highlights include a third-round result in Madrid, a quarterfinal in Rome, and a runner-up feat in Bad Homburg.

Zheng Benefits from Jabeur’s Retirement

19-year-old Qinwen Zheng has had quite a season in 2022. She started the year outside the top 100 and now finds herself at the 51st spot, reaching the peak at #46 in June.

Her highlights include a Challenger title in Valencia and an ITF title in Orlando. Apart from this, she also reached the semifinal in Melbourne 250 and the Australian Open – b0th as a qualifier.

Overall, Zheng’s tally for the year stands at 29-13 – including her two wins in Toronto. In the first round, she beat the veteran Canadian Rebecca Marino 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, while in round two, she played Ons Jabeur and benefited from the Tunisian’s retirement. Jabeur withdrew from the match after trailing 1-6, 1-2 – indicating apparent discomfort.

This worked well for Qinwen, who has now recorded her best results in WTA 1000 events. The question is if she can move past Andreescu too.

Andreescu v Zheng Prediction and Tip

Andreescu had a tough round two, and most likely, it may be the case again when she plays Zheng. Lucky for her, she has the home advantage and crowd support. Expect another long affair where the local favourite comes out on the top.
