Pegula Powers Past Putintseva

World no. 7 Jessica Pegula made it to the Canadian Open semifinals for the second consecutive year, defeating Yulia Putintseva in straight sets in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Pegula, who lost to last year’s champion Camila Giorgi in the semifinals in 2021, put up a dominant show on Friday. She saved the only break point that she faced in the match, while breaking the Kazakh once in the first set and twice in the second to beat the World No. 46, 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 21 minutes.

Seeded No. 7 in the tournament, Pegula began her challenge with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Asia Muhammad in the second round and then got her revenge against Giorgi in the Round of 16, defeating the Italian 3-6, 6-0, 7-5.

Pegula, who has one WTA title to her name, has reached one final this season and that was at the WTA 1000 in Madrid, which the 28-year-old lost to Ons Jabeur. She was also a semifinalist in Miami and made the quarterfinals of the Australian and the French Opens.

Having improved to 29-14 this season, Pegula will now hope to get her 30th win and reach her second final of the season.

Halep Ends Gauff’s Gallant Run

World No. 15 Simona Halep ended Coco Gauff’s gallant run in the tournament to reach a seventh semifinal of the season.

The 30-year-old Romanian improved her season record to 36-10 following Friday’s win. She has been in top form this week, reaching the last four without dropping a set in the first four rounds.

Halep began with a comprehensive 6-0, 6-2 win over Donna Vekić in the first round and then ousted China’s Zhang Shuai 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. She sailed into the quarters with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Jil Teichmann, and on Friday, battled past Gauff 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in a one hour and 48 minute quarterfinal.

Gauff, who had beaten the Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in a three-set thriller in the Round of 32 and Aryna Sabaenka in another dramatic three-setter in the Round of 16, put up a strong fight against Halep, converting 5 of 12 break points but it was Halep, who converted 6 of 11 to edge out the American.

A 23-time champion from 41 finals, Halep reached her only final of the season at the Melbourne Summer Set, where she went on to win the title. Halep is a two-time Canadian Open champion, winning in 2016 and 2018. She was also a finalist in 2015. Can she go on to reach a fourth Rogers Cup final?

Pegula v Halep Prediction and Tip
