Grigor Dimitrov v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

Dimitrov has a 2-1 lead, but Shapovalov won the most recent encounter in Rome in 2020.

Dimitrov Is a Former Champion

2017 Cincinnati Open champion Grigor Dimitrov has an 18-9 record in the tournament. The Bulgarian was also a semifinalist in 2016 and has reached the Round of 16 four times.

Last year as well he won the first two rounds to reach the Round of 16 but was prevented from reaching the quarterfinals by Daniil Medvedev.

In 2017, he had lifted the trophy by beating Nick Kyrgios in the final.

This 31-year-old is 20-15 this season. Among his most notable performances this year were semifinal appearances in Monte-Carlo and Melbourne and last eight finishes in Indian Wells and Delray Beach.

The World No. 19 is an eight-time champion on the tour, but hasn’t won a trophy since 2017. His last appearance in a final was in 2018.

Dimitrov is 9-8 on hard courts this season and 2-2 since the beginning of the North American hard court swing. He won one match and lost one in both the Washington and the Canadian Open.

Form a Concern for Shapovalov

World no. 22 Denis Shapovalov has mostly struggled this season.

The 23-year-old lefty is 1-9 from his last 10 matches, with his only win coming in the opening round at Wimbledon.

The last time Shapovalov had looked in good form, it was in Rome in May, when he reached the quarterfinals. Since that quarterfinal exit, the Canadian has just not been able to get going.

Shapovalov had a bright start to the year, helping Canada lift the ATP Cup and then reaching his maiden quarterfinal at the Australian Open.

Shapovalov also made it to the semis in Dubai and the quarters in Doha during a solid 12-7 start on hard courts. With clay and grass taking away all his momentum, he didn’t start well on the hard courts of North America, falling in the opening rounds in Washington and Montreal. Can he regain form in Cincinnati, where he has a 4-4 record?
