Hubert Hurkacz v Pablo Carreno Busta
Both of these players needed three sets to get to the final and both passed the test with flying colours. Hubert Hurkacz opened well against Casper Ruud but failed to get the job done in the first set.
He fell behind in the 2nd but battled back to take and then he smashed his opponent in the 3rd. It was a superb display of stability and confidence in his games.
Hurkacz has been battling hard all event long and in his own words, he’s not feeling any fatigue. It certainly looked that way against Ruud who fell apart under heavy pressure as the match went on. The crucial stat for the Pole is his service percentage. It wasn’t that great and he was still able to win the match. That is impressive.
For Carreno Busta, the final is very rewarding. He opened well against Matteo Berrettini taking his game apart in a straight sets victory. His play only improved from there and his confidence grew exponentially. It was seen yesterday in the way he struck the ball against Evans. The Brit gave him some trouble winning a very close second set.
Even so, Carreno kept going and smashed Evans 6-2 in the final set.
They played three times before and Carreno is actually leading 2-1. Most of these matches were close and we expect another one. It’s the final after all and Hurkacz dropped quite a few sets this week. He’s favoured but a better value would betting on Busta to win a set. So that’s what we’re recommending.

Simona Halep v Beatriz Haddad Maia
Simona Halep will face a player she already played this year twice in the final in Toronto. The first match came in Australia and Halep won 6-2 6-0. The 2nd one happened in Birmingham on grass and Haddad Maia won in three sets.
It’s a useful demonstration of how far the Brazilian has progressed this year. Coming from an early exit and easy loss to Halep to beating her on grass and now playing in a Masters final.
There is not much to say about Haddad other than she has a 43-15 record. She’s been impressive in the way she’s improved and the confidence with which she plays. Haddad Maia moves well around the court, she serves well, handles pressure well and strikes the ball incredibly clean.
She’s practically a taller version of Jessica Pegula whom Halep barely beat in the previous round.
The ball striking was a huge problem for Halep in Birmingham and she proved in Toronto this weak that it’s a weakness. While Pegula failed to win the match she was dominating rallies against Halep for a very long time in the match. Her consistency was lacking but that’s where Maia is so good.
Outhitting players like Iga Swiatek and Karolina Pliskova is very hard and she’s done it. I do think that Halep is the better player but the form the Brazilian has shown so far in Toronto is ver hard to ignore. I won’t and I’ll back her for the upset.
