Ajla Tomljanovic v Taylor Townsend Head to Head

Townsend leads 1-0, although they last met in the 2017 ITF Waco final, where the American won in three sets.

Tomljanovic, Coming off Mixed Results

World No. 63 Ajla Tomljanovic started her campaign in Cincinnati as a qualifier. In the opening matches, she beat the likes of Clara Tauson (6-2, 6-3) and Nuria Parrizas-Diaz (4-6, 6-1, 6-1).

Her track record in the Western & Southern Open is not that great; in her last three attempts, she has never made it past the second round.

It may be the case this season too, seeing that should Ajla win her opening bout, she will play the number three seed Paula Badosa next.

The 29-year-old had a similar run in the Canadian Open last week where she cleared the prelims after beating Kimberly Birrell, Harriet Dart, and Veronika Kudermetova. She ultimately lost to Iga Swiatek in the first round.

As for her overall season, Tomljanovic has had a bleak year with a litany of early exits. She did redeem herself, however, in the Istanbul Cup, Rabat Open, Nottingham Open, and Wimbledon by reaching the quarterfinal.

Townsend, the Clear Underdog

The fact that Taylor Townsend is ranked #222 on the singles circuit says all there is to know about her form.

Although she is now 16-5 – including her two qualifying wins in Cincinnati Open over Anna Bondar and Peyton Stearns, she hasn’t quite bagged high-profile wins to move up in the rankings.

That may also be in part due to her April return to the tour after the maternity leave (her last tournament prior to this was the 2020 US Open). Townsend has spent her time rebuilding her form with her best run coming in ITF Charleston where she won the title.

Apart from this, she also reached the round two in San Jose as a qualifier and the quarterfinal in Concord Challenger.

Tomljanovic v Townsend Prediction and Tip

This match is Tomljanovic’s to lose; she has the experience and a comparitvely superior pedigree to make quick work of Townsend and reach round two comfortably.

Tip: Tomljanovic to win 2-0: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
