Fritz Sails Into Second Round

America’s Taylor Fritz started off his Cincinnati campaign in style, making quick work of Argentina’s Sebastian Baez on Tuesday.

The World no. 13 wasn’t broken in the match as he saved all three of the break points that he faced. He was very good on his serve, dropping just 9 of his 39 service points.

Fritz broke Baez twice in the opening set and thrice in the second for a comprehensive 6-1, 6-1 victory in just 55 minutes. The 24-year-old is making just a fifth appearance at the Cincinnati Open, but it was his second victory in the tournament having made three first round exits previously.

The win also improved Fritz to 33-13. He has won two titles this year, in Indian Wells and Eastbourne, and was also a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon. But the American has struggled to make the last eight in the past two tournaments, falling in the Round fo 16 in Washington and Montreal, both the times to Dan Evans.

Kyrgios Holds off Davidovich Fokina

Despite going through a bit of ups and downs, Nick Kyrgios kept his perfect first round record in 2022 intact after he held off Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to advance to the second round in Cincy.

The World No. 28 struck 10 aces and 32 winners and converted 3 of 4 break points to oust the Spaniard 7-5, 6-4 in an hour and 31 minutes to improve to 11-0 in opening rounds this year.

Kyrgios has been in sensational form throughout the year and Tuesday’s win improved his season record to 31-8. The Washington Open champion’s nine-match winning streak came to an end last week after he went down to Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open.

The Wimbledon finalist saved two break points in the first set, before converting the only one he held to edge out the first set. He went a break up immediately in the second as well, but Davidovich Fokina drew level at 2-2, only to see the Aussie restore the break advantage in the next game.

Kyrgios held on to the lead to improve to 10-5 in Cincinnati. He was a finalist in 2017, going down to Grigor Dimitrov in the final.

Fritz v Kyrgios Prediction and Tip

Fritz is the 11th seed but given how Krgios has been playing recently the unseeded Aussie may hold the edge in this contest. Expect a tight three-setter with Kyrgios advancing.
