Kvitova Surprise for Jabeur

It hasn’t been a great few outings for Ons Jabeur in recent times and Kvitova took full advantage of that in their third round encounter in Cincinnati.

The former Wimbledon winner, Kvitova, shrugged off a second set loss to claim a 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 victory in a match lasting an hour and 48 minutes to reach the last eight.

Kvitova, who had earlier defeated Jil Teichmann and Sorana Cirstea in the first two rounds, ran off to a 4-0 lead in the first set with a couple of breaks of serve, before clinching it.

Not to be outdone, it was Jabeur who took the early break of serve, only to drop her serve in the seventh game. Serving to stay in the set, however, Kvitova faced three break-points at 4-5 and dropped the set.

That proved to be an aberration though as Kvitova ran through her opponent in the decider, breaking her three times in a row to clinch it to love.

Can Kvitova now try and emulate her performance from 2018 when she was a semifinalist in Cincinnati?

Qualifier Tomljanovic Shocks Kudermetova

In what was her fourth successive three-setter, Tomljanovic overcame Veronika Kudermetova in the third round to reach her first ever career WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

The Aussie overcame a first set loss to complete a three-set and nearly, three-hour win over her Russian opponent.

Tomljanovic, who had earlier also sent Paula Badosa out, dropped her serve twice in the first set in what looked like a quick job for the much-fancied Kudermetova.

In the second, however, she held on to her serve and in the ninth, broke her opponent to get herself an opportunity to serve for the set. That did not happen but in the ensuing tie-breaker, Tomljanovic managed to push the match into a decider.

The final set saw Tomljanovic shrug off a break-point in the very first game but after that it was more or less one-way traffic in her favour. She broke Kudermetova in the eighth game and served it out in the next one to enter the last eight.

Can she continue this shock streak?

Kvitova v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip

While Kvitova is a favourite here, Tomljanovic’s form and her opponent’s recent inconsistencies could make this a tough one to call. Expect it to go to a third set.
