World No. 63 Madison Brengle is coming off a quarterfinal run in the Vancouver Challenger just last week, where she beat Lizette Cabrera and Coco Vandeweghe before succumbing to Emma Navarro.
Before that, the 33-year-old American cleared the qualifiers in the Canadian Open by beating Elsa Jacquemot and Christina McHale – but fell in the opener to Coco Gauff.
Brengle’s season now stands at 20-21; there was a time when she also went on a seven-match losing streak. That said, not all has been dark and gloomy for Madison as she reached the quarterfinal in Adelaide 2 and Saint-Malo Challenger, and round three in Doha and Miami.

Gracheva in the Same Boat
Varvara Gracheva, 10 years younger to Brengle, is ranked just one spot above her counterpart, and oddly enough, her tally too stands at 20-21.
Unlike Madison, however, the young Russian has had a disappointing spell in North America off late as she lost in the opening matches in Concord Challenger and Cincinnati Open – respectively to Ysaline Bonaventure and Peyton Stearns.
In fact, Gracheva has been incurring these opening defeats for quite some time; the last time she won a first-round match was in Valencia in June. Following that, she has lost eight matches consecutively.
Varvara had a relatively better clay swing where she reached the second round in Istanbul and Madrid (as a qualifier) and the third round in the French Open. This is not entirely surprising given that she has always been a clay-court specialist.
Brengle v Gracheva Prediction and Tip
This match is effectively Brengle’s to lose. She has the home advantage, is heavily experienced, and has far more momentum than Gracheva at this point in time. This may very well prove to be a one-sided affair.
