Grigor Dimitrov v Dominic Thiem Head to Head
There have been six previous meetings between these two players and Dimitrov is a surprising 4-2 leader on head to head.
One of Thiem’s wins came on clay while Dimitrov has won the remaining four on hard court surfaces. In their last meeting at the 2021 Australian Open, Dimitrov had routed Thiem in straight sets to reach the quarterfinal.

While he is ranked 19th in the world, Dimitrov hasn’t had the best of runs in recent times. In fact since losing in the third round of the French Open in May, Dimitrov hasn’t won back to back matches even once, falling in the first round at Wimbledon and then again in Cincinnati last week.
The season looked to have begun reasonably well for Dimitrov when he made the semifinal at the Melbourne Summer Set 1 in January and then again the quarterfinal at the Indian Wells Masters.
Following on from there, Dimitrov did reasonably well on clay for starters too but it’s his performances in more recent times that would be a worry.
And now taking on a player who, on his day, can mesmerise the best in the world, Dimitrov will have a task on his hand to avoid losing a third match in a row.

Thiem Huffs & Puffs to a Win over Wolf
In his prime, Thiem might not have even seen a third set against JJ Wolf but he is definitely not playing peak-level tennis and that almost saw his demise from this competition.
Thiem needed three hours and 11 minutes to overcome Wolf 6-7 (5), 7-5, 7-6 (6) to reach the second round. He saved two match-points in the process, coming back from a 4-6 deficit in the final set tie-breaker to win four points in a row and close out the victory.
This was Thiem’s first win on a hard court surface since beating Aslan Karatsev in Doha last March – yes, that’s about 17 months ago!
Can he now show similar grit in holding off Dimitrov, who himself isn’t in the best of form?
