Kenin on a Long Road to Redemption

Things have not gone well for the 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin this year.

Her struggles with form and injury have knocked her out of the top 300, as she is now #415. In fact, she did not compete in any tournament between the Indian Wells Open and Citi Open as she took the time to recuperate and focus on her health.

Before coming to Cleveland for Tennis in the Land Open, Kenin was on an eight-match losing streak (2-9 this season) – including her first-round losses in Washington, Toronto, and Cincinnati.

However, she broke that jinx by beating Dalayna Hewitt 6-4, 6-3, to record her third victory of the year. That win will do wonders for her confidence as she now sets her sights on a rare quarterfinal in 2022.

Begu Beats Stearns

Irina-Camelia Begu started her journey in Cleveland with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Peyton Stearns in the opener. As a runner-up from last year, Begu will fancy her chances of repeating the same feat again – and possibly going the distance.

Her record now stands at 24-14 with respectable results across all turfs.

Begu, ranked World No. 34, was a quarterfinalist in Melbourne, a semifinalist in St. Petersburg, and the champion in WTA Palermo. In addition, the 31-year-old Romanian reached the round of 16 in the French Open and WTA Charleston.

Kenin v Begu Prediction and Tip

Begu is the obvious favourite here – she has had a good season with several high-profile wins over the likes of Aryna Sabalenka, Petra Kvitova, Shuai Zhang, and Jessica Pegula. She has also got a fair bit of momentum to easily dispatch the out-of-form Kenin.

That said, Sofia is playing at home and has got the skillset needed to upset Begu. It seems to be a matter of confidence and shaking the rust off more than anything else. For those who like to bet on underdogs, backing the American may lead to good returns.
