Munar Slowly Improving

Jaume Munar was never considered a good hard-court player but he’s slowly improving on the surface highlighted by his recent play. Beating players like Christopher O’Connel and Steve Johnson in Cincinnati is certainly respectable for someone strictly considered a clay player.

The most fascinating part is that he’s playing the same style on hard court as his doing on clay and it’s working. Munar is a long rally type of player keeping the ball in play and slowly breaking down his opponent through a combination of changing pace and attacking.

To the untrained eye, it looks quite defensive but it’s actually more offensive and very tactical. The only way to beat him is to take the initiative a finish off points quickly. It’s what Marin Cilic did in Cincinnati and that’s the only way to properly do it.

42-21 is the score this year with 11-6 on hard courts.

Tseng Rising Through the Ranks

The 2001-born Tsenga has posted a 37-16 record this year with some solid wins and a slow rise that has him playing ATP events fairly consistently now. And it’s very good tennis overall with some noted wins. Just last week he downed Pedro Martinez in the Cincinnati qualifiers. Now he’s beaten Marton Fucsovics in round one of this event.

Tseng is not a physically imposing player but he’s very bold in the way he plays and he can certainly surprise you. Most of his wins or losses come after three sets as he’s yet to find a good balance in his game and consistency suffers. It’s quite typical for a young player.

Facing Munar will present several issues for him because he’s not that good at attacking on paper. He will try it because you can’t play any other way but it will be tough. The Spaniard is the heavy favourite but that gives Tseng a chance to play without pressure.

Munar v Tseng Prediction and Tip

Jaume Munar is the more complete player at the moment and I presume that it will matter. He should be able to adjust and take the win but he might need three sets to do it.

Tip: Munar to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
