Evans participated in both the Masters events in the lead-up to this year’s US Open and while at one he did extremely well, the one that followed led to his early ouster.
The British player made it as far as the semifinal at the Canadian Open but more vitally, registered wins over Andrey Rublev and Taylor Fritz while getting there. He then went down to Pablo Carreno Busta, the ultimate winner there.
However, what followed in Cincinnati was bit of a surprise. Evans fell at the very first hurdle there, losing to Filip Krajinovic and in straight sets at that.
Overall, Evans is 14-9 in hard court competitions this year, with the Canadian Masters showing being his best.
Having reached the fourth round at US Open last year, Evans would love to be able to emulate that again this season.

Vesely’s Not Played Any US Open Series Competitions
Vesely had made it to the third round at Wimbledon and then won his opener at Newport Open, the last tournament of the season on grass. He injured his hamstring in the process, withdrawing before his second round match and opting not to play at the US Open Series.
What he did, instead, was to feature in a couple of Challenger events in Canada.
At the Vancouver Challenger, Vesely managed to make it to the second round before crashing out, and then lost his opener at Granby earlier this week too.
So while Vesely looks to have regained most of his fitness, the big question is whether he is match fit enough coming into this tournament. Especially against the in-form Evans.
