Having reached the quarterfinal of the Canadian Open earlier this month, Gauff would have liked to go as far if not better that showing in Cincinnati.
However, an ankle twist in the first set of her opener against Marie Bouzkova left Gauff in a lot of pain and eventually forced her to retire from the encounter. She later revealed it was a minor ankle sprain and that there was nothing to worry about.
This will be the first match where Gauff will test her ankle again and hope she can add to her 15 wins in hard court competitions this season. She has had 10 losses to go with that, having never reached the final of a hard court event since her 2019 title win in Linz.
The French Open finalist faces a less than challenging opening test but a strong showing will be more vital from the perspective of her own confidence coming in after that injury issue.

Jeanjean in Her Maiden US Open Main Draw Match
Jeanjean had earlier surprised a few fans with her run through to the third round of the French Open. More importantly, wins over Nuria Parrizas Diaz and Karolina Pliskova in that tournament, who were both 1/5 favourites going into those encounters, would have made Jeanjean believe in her own capabilities.
Since then, Jeanjean has won the odd round here and there but most of her solid performances at the highest level have come on clay.
In fact, the 149th-ranked player will be playing her first main draw match of a hard court competition here, having come through in the qualifiers with relative ease.
Jeanjean was taken to the third set by Ipek Oz but then eased past Varvara Flink and Georgina Garcia-Perez in the next two rounds to make it through. Can she make it count on her US Open debut?
