Nadia Podoroska v Anna Karolina Schmiedlova Head to Head

Podoroska and Schmiedlova have faced off once before in the autumnal French Open in 2020. The Argentine won that match and went on to reach her first and thus far only Grand Slam semifinal.

Podoroska Uses Protected Ranking to Play US Open

Nadia Podoroska is one of six players using a protected ranking at this year’s US Open. The woman from Rosario has endured a turbulent year with injuries, being forced to miss out from the competition since last year’s US Open and only returning during the European clay-court season.

Podoroska famously shocked the tennis world at the 2020 French Open when she reached her maiden Grand Slam semifinal as a qualifier, only to lose to eventual champion Iga Swiatek.

That same year she won the WTA’s Newcomer of the Year prize and reached a high ceiling of World No. 36. However, the hard work and grind came at the expense of her body as she battled through pain for pretty much the whole 2021 season.

Podoroska was forced to shut down her season after a first-round loss to Greet Minnen at last year’s US Open and took an extended break from tennis in order to recover.

Schmiedlova Far from Convincing

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova won’t have the burden of qualifying on her shoulders as a spate of withdrawals has given her a straight ticket to the main draw of this year’s event.

Last season Schmiedlova was involved in some physically brutal qualifying matches in New York and was gassed by the time she reached the main draw, losing to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the second round.

The Slovak hasn’t managed to build on her ranking fall, as she is still hovering outside the top 100. Her record on hard courts this year is 4-7 with her only notable result coming in Guadalajara when she made the quarterfinal towards the end of February.

Schmiedlova has been on a dreadful run of form in the build-up to the US Open, having lost her last six consecutive matches and only winning one set in that timeframe.

Podoroska v Schmiedlova Prediction and Tip

Granted Podoroska has played very little tennis on hard courts, she has won a ton of matches outside it. The same cannot be said of Schimeldova who is in appalling form. Take the Argentine to win this quite comfortably.

Tip: Podoroska to win in straight sets: 11/10 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
