Taylor Townsend missed the whole of last season after giving birth and taking extended maternity leave. She has since returned in good health and is now using a protected ranking at this year’s US Open.
Townsend’s ranking dropped outside the top 200 and had to start from scratch at the turn of the year, playing a series of ITF tournaments on home soil in order to accumulate match sharpness.
She won the Charleston ITF event at the start of May but was well beaten by Carolina Garcia at the clay Slam in Paris. Townsend did not partake in any grass court tournaments in the European summer and traveled straight back home to prepare for the US Open.
The American lefty was forced to qualify her way into the WTA events in San Jose and Cincinnati and was beaten in the first round in both.

Siniakova Looks to Turn Around US Open Record
Katerina Siniakova is an experienced doubles specialist having won multiple Grand Slam titles and risen to world No. 1 on the doubles court.
This year alone she has captured four titles alongside her fellow Czech Barbora Krejcikova (3) and once with Bernarda Pera. Two of those were the Grand Slam titles in the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
Her singles record does not match those numbers. She has suffered a host of first-round defeats at tour level and currently sits 83rd in the rankings.
Siniakova was forced to play an ITF event in order to restore some semblance of confidence just before the US Open and she won one in Poland.
