Kasatkina Hunting for First Win

The 11th-ranked Russian Kasatina might be playing in the quarter-final at this St. Petersburg Open, but the fact is she is yet to win a match. Not in this tournament or before this in 2019.

She had begun her year with a first round loss at the hands of Kimberly Birrell at the Brisbane International before Aliaksandra Sasnovich crushed her in their opener at Sydney. She lost in straight sets.

And continuing with this loss momentum, Kasatkina was a 6-3, 6-0 loser to Timea Bacsinszky in their opening round match at the first major of the year.

Coming into this tournament, Kasatkina would have hoped for a change in fortunes and while she has got that in one form, fact is she is yet to step on to the court. After getting a first round bye, she was expected to play fellow Russian Maria Sharapova, who retired from the encounter with an injury issue even the match started.

As a result, this match against Zvonareva will be the first she plays after the start of this tournament.

Experienced Zvonareva Hoping for Better Showing

Ranked outside the top 100, Zvonareva will be quite chuffed about her performances this year. Now while she went down in her opening round encounter at the Australian Open, she has been a revelation at 34 on either side of that showing.

In Shezhen, she won three matches to make the semi-final and that has been followed by her wins over Ekaterina Makarova and Julia Goerges in the first and second round here at St. Petersburg. Another win here – as tough as it sounds against a player looking to make the top 10 – should pull her through inside the top 100 but it would need something big to go the distance here.
