Lorenzo Musetti needed almost five hours to defeat David Goffin in a brutal match that saw both players struggle to keep up the high level due to fatigue. Neither one wanted to play that long but there was very little separation hence why it ended in a tiebreak.
It wasn’t a particularly quality match as neither player played too well. Both had far more errors than winners but it balanced itself out to a close match that was won by Musetti in the final set. The Italian has shown a lot of progress this year and he’s been actually winning matches.
He won Hamburg against Alcaraz which is superb and hopes to finish the season strong on the hard courts. It’s a part of the game that need a lot of work but matches like these will give him the belief that he can do well on them.
A 30-20 record is pretty strong for Musetti but a 3rd round here would be even better

Brouwer Shocks Mannarino
Adrian Mannarino hoped to recover in time for the US Open following his Winston-Salem triumph but he was unable to do so. The French player was quite sluggish most of the time and Brouwer was able to take advantage of that.
A player who can serve and play well, the Dutch used his chance in this match beating Mannarino in straight sets. That was particularly key for him as he didn’t want to allow Mannarino to come back into the match. He served well and played solid from the baseline.
It’s all he can do and then wait and see if it’s enough. Much more will be needed against Musetti but if he catches him fatigued like Mannarino he can win.
It’s a great chance for Brouwer who is battling to get closer to the top 100. A 3rd round effort here would be a huge step in that direction. 43-22 on the year proves how much he improved.
Musetti v Brouwer Prediction and Tip
This will mostly come down to how well Musetti can recover. If he recovers well he should win the match but if he doesn’t he might even lose.
I suspect he will be good to go but he won’t get it done in three sets.
