Despite having come into the tournament on the back of some lousy form, Rune did well to register a straight-set win over Peter Gojowczyk in his opener.
Rune was on court for two hours and 33 minutes as he went past Gojowczyk 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (5) to seal his first ever win at the US Open.
What separated Rune from his opponent was his serving – he had slightly better figures on all three stats, the first serve percentage, first serve won and second serve won. This allowed him to get away with no breaks of serves against him despite facing six break-points while Rune broke Gojowczyk three times.
By the time Gojowczyk found his feet, Rune had run away with the encounter. Can he now stall the tall-serving American too?

Isner Brings Cincinnati Form Forward
Isner hasn’t had the best campaign this season on hard court surfaces but the kind of run he had in Cincinnati in the lead-up to the US Open would have spurred him on. And that showed up in his first round win over Argentina’s Federico Delbonis.
Spending just an hour and 54 minutes on court, Isner demolished Delbonis 6-3, 6-1, 7-5 to proceed to the second round.
The American’s serving has never been a problem and that was on show yet again as he slammed 19 aces and faced no break-points in the entire encounter. In turn, Isner broke Delbonis five times to clinch the deal.
What Isner will know is that despite his own form issues he will now be up against a player who is himself battling some of them. And that, combined with Isner’s continued strong serving should make him a strong favourite here.
