Despite going into her first round match against the former champion Naomi Osaka as an underdog, Collins showed she is not one to be trifled with as the American registered a straight-set win.
Collins won 7-6 (5), 6-3 in an hour and 36 minutes, in a match where Osaka had her chances but wasn’t allowed to get going with them.
In both sets, it was Osaka who drew first blood with a service break but Collins managed to pull things back and raced past her opponent. Having not played a single match in the US Open Series in the lead-up to the year’s final Grand Slam, Collins came back from 0-3 down in the first set to win it in a tie-breaker.
And in the second, Osaka served for a 3-1 lead, only to lose her serve in the fourth and eighth game to concede the encounter.
With this win, which had traces of Collins’ run to the final of the Australian Open and quarterfinal in Miami, the American will back herself to go deep into the tournament.

Qualifier Bucsa Runs Past Juvan
There wasn’t much to choose between Bucsa and her first round opponent Kaja Juvan on a hard court surface but it was the qualifier who prevailed in straight sets in the end.
Bucsa won 6-4, 6-4 in less than an hour and a half, to make it to the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time ever in her career.
The Spaniard broke Juvan in the very first game and while she frittered away three set-points on her opponent’s serve at 3-5, Bucsa inched forward by serving the first set out.
The story seemed to be repeating in the second set as well with Bucsa breaking her opponent in game one, but then dropped her serve in the sixth game. At 4-4, however, Juvan dropped serve again allowing Bucsa to serve it out.
Known primarily for her performances at the ITF level, this only Bucsa’s third main draw win on the WTA circuit for the season.
