The in-form Jessica Pegula began another Grand Slam campaign in style, demolishing Viktorija Golubic in the opening round in just 65 minutes on Tuesday.
The World No. 8 won 83% points on the back of her first serve, converted 5 of 6 break points and was broken just once in the match during a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
The eighth seed had reached the quarterfinals of the Australian and the French Opens this year and also reached the third round at Wimbledon for the first time in her career.
Pegula has been one of the most consistent players this year, but is yet to add to the Washington Open title she won in 2019. This year she reached her maiden WTA 1000 final in Madrid and also reached the semifinals in Miami and the Canadian Open and finished in the last eight in Cincinnati. Overall she improved her season record to 32-16 following Tuesday’s win.
She will be hoping to improve that record further in the next round and reach the third round for a third successive year at Flushing Meadows.

Sasnovich Sees Off Cocciaretto
Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich reached the second round at the U.S. Open for the sixth time as she dispatched Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto in straight sets on Tuesday.
The World No. 32, who was a finalist in her last tournament in Cleveland, needed an hour and 21 minutes to register a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Sasnovich faced six break points in the match and she saved four of them. She herself had eight opportunities to break the World no. 99, and she capitalised on five of those chances.
With the win the 28-year-old is now 34-17 this season. Besides the final in Cleveland she was also a finalist in Melbourne at the start of the year and reached three other quarterfinals.
It will be interesting to see if she can upset the eighth seed in the next round.
