Denis Shapovalov v Roberto Carballés Baena Head to Head

It’s 1-1 between the two. The Spaniard won at the French Open in 2020, while the Canadian won at the same stage of the U.S. Open last year.

Shapovalov Stretched in Opener

Switzerland’s Marc-Andrea Huesler stretched Denis Shapovalov to five sets in the opening round contest on Tuesday, before the Canadian raised his level to avoid an early exit.

Huesler, who was a semifinalist in Winston-Salem last week, took the opening set with ease. The World no. 21 rebounded by winning the next two sets, only to lose the fourth set to the Swiss, who forced the decider. Shapovalov brought out his A-game in the final set, destroying the World no 85 for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory in two hours and 57 minutes.

With the win, the 23-year-old improved to 14-5 at the U.S. Open. Interestingly he has never lost in the first two rounds of his previous five appearances, with his best being a quarterfinal finish in 2020.

Shapovalov won 80% points on his first delivery and struck 12 aces and 57 winners in the opening round match. He was error-prone too, double faulting 11 times and making 34 unforced errors.

An Australian Open quarterfinalist this year, Shapovalov has been very inconsistent this year and a 20-18 record proves that. Can he keep his perfect second round record at Flushing Meadows intact with a win on Thursday?

Carballes Baena Dumps Out Munar

World No. 80 Roberto Carballés Baena marched into the second round for the fourth time in his fifth try at the U.S. Open.

The Spaniard, 29, ousted compatriot Jaume Munar in a a four-set encounter, which began on Tuesday but could only be completed on Wednesday. During the three hour and 15 minute contest, Carballes Baena converted 7 of 11 break points and saved 8 of 10 that he faced.

Carballes Baena also struck 39 winners and made 27 unforced errors compared to Munar’s 28 winners and 48 unforced errors.

Carballes Baena will now be aiming to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for just the second time in his career. He had made it that far at the French Open two years ago. Can the 29-year-old, who improved to 8-15 following the win, cause a second round upset?

Shapovalov v Carballés Baena Prediction and Tip

While Carballes Baena thrives on clay he still doesn’t have a lot of experience on hard court. In contrast, Shapovalov can be dangerous on any surface and has a particular liking for hard. Expect the Canadian to ease past the Spaniard in the second round.
