Argentina’s Pedro Cachin won a marathon for the second straight round to reach the third round of a major for the first time.

The 27-year-old, who made his Grand Slam debut at the French Open this year, had won his opening round match by holding off a comeback bid from Aljaz Bedene.

On Wednesday, it was the Argentine who fought back after losing the first two sets to complete a remarkable comeback win over qualifier Brandon Holt, who is the son of former women’s No. 1 and two-time U.S. Open champion Tracy Austin.

Holt, who had stunned Taylor Fritz in the first round, raced to a two-sets-to-love lead in no time. The World No. 66 Cachin took some time to get going but he found his rhythm in the third set and then edged the fourth set tiebreak to tie the match.

Neither player got broken in the final set, but it was the Argentine who dominated the final set match tiebreak to win 1-6, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (10-6) in three hours and 44 minutes.

A clay court specialist, Cachin is playing his first tour-level hard court tournament. He has played very little on the surface at the lower levels as well; but having eked out two difficult wins, he will be much more confident now going into the next round.

Moutet Marches On

He entered the main draw as a lucky loser, then advanced to the second round by winning just two sets. On Wednesday, Corentin Moutet ousted 21st seed Botic van de Zandschulp in four sets to advance to the third round for a second time at the U.S. Open.

Moutet, who fell at this stage in 2020, now has a great chance of making his fourth round debut in the majors.

The Frenchman, who lost in his third qualifying round to Wu Yibing, found a lucky loser’s spot in the tournament. He was off to a solid start against Stan Wawrinka in the opener, taking the first two set before the Swiss resigned.

Against Van de Zandschulp, Moutet was out-aced 2-18 and he also hit 17 fewer winners than the Dutch player’s 44. However, he was disciplined in terms of errors, double faulting just 5 times and making 34 unforced errors to Van de Zandschulp’s 10 double faults and 58 unforced errors.

Moutet converted 6 of 8 break points and saved 6 of 10 to win 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 59 minutes. Can he keep the momentum going?
