Sinner Overcomes Eubanks

It was a tough start for Jannik Siner, who needed five sets to come through the first round. The Italian tightened his game in the second round to beat qualifier Christopher Eubanks in straight sets, but it was by no means an easy win as the American did put up some resistance before going down.

The World No. 13 made just 16 unforced errors to Eubanks’ 51 and converted 4 of 12 break points, while saving 3 of 4 to win the two-hour-and-24-minute contest 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), 6-2.

The win followed the 21-year-old’s three-hour-and-35-minute first round victory over Germany’s Daniel Altmaier. Sinner had bounced back after losing the first set in that match, but was taken to five sets by the German. The Italian eventually won 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

The win over Eubanks was Sinner’s 40th of the season. He has reached a number of quarterfinals this year, including at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, but hasn’t gone on to win many trophies. A winner of four titles from five finals last year, Sinner won his only title in Umag last month.

He is one win away from matching his best U.S. Open performance. Last year, he recorded his first wins in the New York major, and went on to reach the fourth round. This year, making his fourth appearance in the tournament, the 11th seed will be aiming to go even further. But first his focus will be on the next round, where he faces a player who is getting into a habit of lifting his game in majors.

Nakashima Takes Down Dimitrov

He made it to the third round on his French Open debut this year, reached the fourth round in what was just his second appearance at Wimbledon and has now won two matches in a row for the first time at the U.S. Open in his third try.

World no. 69 Brandon Nakashima is slowly building a reputation of lifting his game in big tournaments. And so far he has been very good in his home slam.

Nakashima began his campaign with a straight sets win over Pavel Kotov and then got a huge win in the second round, upsetting the 17th seed Grigor Dimitrov on Thursday. The 21-year-old didn’t drop a set against the Bulgarian either. He saved all the five break points that he faced and capitalised on 2 of the 10 break chances he had in the match to register a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, 6-3 victory in two hours and 23 minutes.

The American had also won the first set of the opening round in a tiebreak before outclassing the Russian qualifier 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 6-2.

The fast-improving Nakashima has improved his season record to 21-18. Can he keep the winning momentum going.

Sinner v Nakashima Prediction and Tip
