Not that it was ever expected to be easy but Tommy Paul did have his moments when he thought he could have gotten past Ruud in their third round encounter. In the end, Ruud was on court for nearly four and a half hours before he managed to stave off his opponent’s advances.
Fortunately for Ruud, he after seeing three tie-breakers in the first four sets, he managed to bagel Paul in an anti-climatic final set and now has a day’s break to recover from the gruelling encounter.
Ruud had earlier overcome Kyle Edmund in straight sets in the first round before needing four sets against Tim van Rijthoven.
That also brought Ruud his 14th win in hard court competitions this season to go with just five defeats which is solid going for someone who has often been touted as a clay-courter (and why not given eight of nine ATP titles have been on the red dirt).
The luck of draw has meant Ruud doesn’t have to face either Taylor Fritz or Botic van de Zandschulp, the two seeded players in his section. He will be a strong favourite to make it to the quarterfinal at a non-clay Grand Slam for the first time in his career with bet365 offering 1/5 for his win.

Lucky Loser Moutet Creates US Open History
At no previous edition of the US Open has a lucky loser ever progressed as far as the fourth round which means lucky loser Moutet probably knew he was going into his third round encounter with history beckoning.
And he did not let that effect him as he took down Pedro Cachin 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in three hours and 15 minutes to set up this meeting with Ruud.
Moutet had earlier gotten the better of Stan Wawrinka in the first round and then surprised van de Zandschulp in the second to seal off this third round meeting.
No player in the history of any Grand Slams has ever gone beyond this stage which means Moutet has another bite at history when he takes on Ruud. He will, however, have to do it the hard way as he starts out at 7/2 with bet365 to surprise his opponent.
