Elise Mertens v Qiang Wang Head to Head

It’s been a fierce contest between the two players over the years; their tally is tied at 3-3. They last met in the 2020 WTA Doha where Mertens won in straight sets.

Mertens Coming off Mixed Results

Elise Mertens, current World No. 43, is coming to Tokyo on the back of an uneventful spell this season. She is 20-19 as of this week, with her best results reaching the round of 16 in the Aus Open, French Open, and Wimbledon.

Most recently, she competed in the US Open but ended up losing in the opener to Irina-Camelia Begu. Before that, however, the 26-year-old Belgian made it to the third round in Cincinnati after dismissing Karolina Pliskova en route.

On the doubles side of things, however, Mertens has had an exceptional year. She is the current No. 3 there, with an impressive six finals (one title, five runner-ups).

Her last prominent feat there was the Wimbledon Doubles with Shuai Zhang, where they lost to the pairing of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.

That said, Elise has been a bit unsuccessful in carrying some of that success and form onto the singles circuit.

Wang, Looking Menacing

World No. 101 Qiang Wang has not got a pedigree half as impressive as Mertens’, but she is still a player who is not to be undermined.

The 30-year-old Chinese is 25-17 and has recently reached the semifinal in the Prague Open (as a qualifier) and the Concord Challenger. Wang had reached the same stage in the Guadalajara Open and followed it with a quarterfinal stint in the Monterrey Open.

At the same time, Wang has seen her fair share of losses to several higher-ranked players like Coco Gauff, Sara Sorribes Tormo, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Elena-Gabriela Ruse, and Anastasia Potapova. There have also been instances where Qiang was stunned by players ranked much lower than her – notably Coco Vandeweghe, Nao Hibino, Heather Watson, and Arina Rodionova.

Clearly, she will need to be careful with Mertens, but given her track record against her, she will fancy her chances.

Mertens v Wang Prediction and Tip

This match can go either way, as neither is in the best of form. Mertens has the advantage with her silverware collection but her lack of momentum gives Wang an opening.
