Haddad Maia Looking for Another Deep Run

It has been a phenomenal year for Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, who has achieved a number of firsts this year. Among them were her first two WTA titles, a first appearance in a final of a WTA 1000 tournament and a first doubles final at a Grand Slam tournament.

The Brazilian has been consistent throughout the year and that is reflected in her 46-19 season record, which also includes stats from tournaments at the lower level. On the tour, Haddad Maia is 29-17. She won her maiden WTA title on grass in Nottingham and followed that up with a second title the very next week in Birmingham.

The lefty has also found success on hard courts where she is 19-12, across levels this year. Her best on the surface saw her reach a first WTA 1000 final in Toronto, where she went down to Simona Halep in the final.

Haddad Maia, who also won the WTA 125 in Saint Malo and finished runner-up in WTA 125 in Paris, played the Australian Open doubles final with Anna Danilina.

Currently ranked No. 18, the 26-year-old most recently competed in the Slovenia Open. She won her first two rounds, but failed to go past the quarterfinal.

Seeded No. 5 in the tournament she will be expected to go deep in Tokyo.

Naito Receives a Wild Card

Facing Haddad Maia in the opener will be Japan’s Yuki Naito, who has been handed a wild card for the tournament.

The 21-year-old is a six-time ITF champion from 13 finals and has a 5-5 record in clay court finals. So clearly clay has been the surface where she has found most of her success so far. However, she did win one hard court event and finish runner-up in another.

Currently ranked no. 207 in the world, Naito is 30-20 from all competitions this year. She has featured in three ITF finals this year, but lost all three of them.

Last year she had made it to the quarterfinals in Seoul. Can she impress the home crowd on her home debut?
