Ugo Humbert v Benjamin Bonzi Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before on the main tour, and that was just last month at the US Open, Bonzi winning their opening round match in five sets.

They have also met twice on the junior tours, Bonzi winning their match in Egypt in 2017, whilst it was Humbert who won their encounter in Canada three years ago.

Humbert Plunging Down the Rankings

Humbert has suffered a precipitous fall down the rankings in a little more than a year, and has had to rely on a wildcard this time to gain automatic entrance into this event.

That all seemed most unlikely when he won the tournament in Halle last year, his third major tournament win inside 18 months, helping him to reach the giddy heights of 25 in the world.

But it has been largely downhill since then, with a bout of Covid earlier in the year not helping with his progress.

However, there are just faint signs that a recovery could be on the cards. In the past two months he has reached three Challenger semi-finals, and, by the time he  plays Bonzi, would have played Dominic Thiem of Austria in the final of a tournament in Rennes.

Bonzi Made His Name on the Challenger Tour

Bonzi has forged his reputation on the Challenger Tour, where he has appeared in ten finals, winning his last seven in a row, including two this year, in Cherbourg in February, and in Aix-en-Provence three months ago.

He has yet to translate that success to the senior tour, although he did reach his first semi-final earlier this year, also in French soil, in Marseilles.

Since then, his best performance came in  Winston Salem, where he reached the last eight.

That win over Humbert at the US Open, marked his debut in New York, although he then lost to Nick Kyrgios in four sets in the next round.

Subsequently, playing for France in the Davis Cup, he lost all three of his singles matches.

Humbert v Bonzi Prediction and Tip

Although Humbert is showing signs of a long overdue return to form, Bonzi did win their match in New York last month, and will be confident of repeating the trick against his compatriot.
