Denis Shapovalov v Marcel Granollers Head to Head

The pair have never met on the ATP tour – Montpellier Open will be the first meeting between the world number 25, and the man ranked 91 places below him.

Shapovalov, A Rising Star

19-year old Shapovalov is one of the rising stars of the game. After a highly successful junior career, which saw him win a Grand Slam single title at Wimbledon and a Grand Slam doubles at the US Open, he turned pro in 2017, and has since become the youngest player to break into the world’s top 30.

Called the new “Rod Laver”, this Israeli-born Canadian has won four titles on the ITF Futures circuit, as well as 2 ATP Challenger events. He has yet to translate that into s senior ATP tour title but that is surely a matter of when, and not if.

Currently ranked 25 in the world, his year started in disappointing fashion at the Auckland Open where he lost in the first round to Joao Sousa. In the first major of the year, the Australian Open he got to the third round where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic, the eventual winner. But at least he took a set off the Serb which is more than Rafael Nadal managed in the final.

Most recently, he helped his side progress in the Davis Cup at the expense of Slovakia.

Granollers – Veteran Doubles Specialist

Granollers who is 32, turned pro as far back as 2003, has 4 ATP titles to his name, although you have to go back near six years to his last win in Kitzbühel Austria. Although he was once ranked as high as 19 in the world in singles, those days are long in his past, and he is better known as a doubles player, having won 16 titles in his career.

These days he divides his time between the ATP senior and challenger tours, and has already won the Da Nang Challenger title in Vietnam this year. However, his senior track record in 2019 has been less impressive, and his hard-fought victory over Ivo Karlovic in the first round on Monday was his first ATP singles victory of the year on the senior tour.

Shapovalov v Granollers Predictions & Tips

Shapovalov will start this match as odds-on favourite. He is the coming man playing an opponent who is in the twilight of his career, and is more comfortable on a doubles court than singles these days.

The Canadian will also be fresher, whilst Granollers will be coming off the back of his exertions against Karlovic.
