In stark contrast to 2021, 2022 has been a forgettable season for Emma Raducanu so far, as the Briton has just not found the momentum this year.
However, the 19-year-old is hoping for a change of fortunes in Korea, and after starting off well with a first round win over Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima, she will be hoping to build on the solid start with a dynamic display in the second round on Thursday.
Raducanu dominated the first set against the World No. 126 and also raced to a 5-0 lead in the second, but she missed two match points in the sixth game and allowed the Japanese player to win four games in a row, making a comeback in the contest. But Raducanu finally held serve once again in the 10th game to win the contest 6-2, 6-4.
Raducanu, who entered this year’s U.S. Open as the defending champion but lost in the very first round, is aiming to reach just her third quarterfinal of the season after Stuttgart and Washington. She has rarely won successive matches this year and has not gone past the last eight stage even once this year.
Wednesday’s win improved her to 15-17 in 2022. She will be hoping to close that gap between wins and losses even further on Thursday.

Wickmayer Registers Rare Tour-Level Win
Facing Raducanu in Round 2 is Yanina Wickmayer, who ousted last week’s Chennai Open champion Linda Fruhvirtova in straight sets on Wednesday.
Ranked No. 460th in the world, the 32-year-old knocked out the 17-year-old World No. 74 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Wickmayer converted 5 of 9 break points and saved 4 of 6 during the one hour and 30 minute contest, which saw Fruhvirtova double fault 10 times in the match.
Wickmayer, who is making just her third main draw appearance on the tour this year, won her second tour-level match of the year. She had won the first round match at Wimbledon after qualifying for the main event.
Having mostly featured at the ITF level this year, Wickmayer would be delighted to have beaten the Czech in the opener. Can she now oust the sixth seed on Thursday?
