Life on the tennis court looked like it was headed in the right direction for Rune when he reached his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at the French Open this season. That had followed a title in Munich on clay and a semifinal appearance at Lyon Open.
Since then, however, Rune’s form has fallen away as tennis moved away from clay and on to grass and hard court.
In fact since entering the last eight stage at Roland Garros, Rune has won just three of the 14 matches he’s featured in. What’s made this worse for the Danish player is that three of these 11 defeats have come on clay, all of which were in round one of tournaments.
Rune will now hope he can turn things around following his third round appearance at the US Open earlier this month. Up against a player ranked 61st in the world, he could have a chance.

Bonzi Dispels Humbert Threat
It took him three sets but Bonzi proved to be the better French player on the day as he came through against Ugo Humbert in the opening round of the competition.
Bonzi was on court for an hour and 46 minutes in his 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Humbert as he paved his way to the second round for the third tournament in a row. He had earlier reached the last eight stage at the Winston-Salem Open and then entered round two at US Open.
The Frenchman had earlier been a semifinalist at another indoor hardcourt competition in February – in Marseille – following a title win on the same surface in a Challenger tournament in Cherbourg.
