Samsonova in Her Third WTA Final

World No. 30 Liudmila Samsonova is set to compete in her third WTA final since August.

Following her superb week in Tokyo, she is now 17-1 – stretching across her title runs in the Citi Open and Cleveland Open and her fourth-round stint in the US Open.

The 23-year-old has done wonderfully well to carry forward that form to this part of the world. She beat a handful of big names on her way to the 2022 Toray Pan Pacific Open final.

In the opener, she dispatched the current Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 6-2, 6-4 and followed it with another 2-0 win over Xinyu Wang in round two. In the quarterfinal, she met the former world number one Garbine Muguruza and knocked her out 6-4, 6-2.

In the semis, Liudmila met the veteran Chinese doubles specialist Shuai Zhang and won 7-6(4), 6-2.

With this kind of form, Qinwen should not prove to be that big a problem. However, the 19-year-old has had an amazing spell herself and is well placed to put up a fight.

Qinwen, Soon to Become Chinese No. 1

Qinwen Zheng may still be a teenager, but she plays like a well-seasoned pro. She is the second-highest-ranked player from China on the WTA Tour, although she may become the number one in the country by the end of the season.

She is 36-15 and ready to compete in her first career WTA final. What’s been impressive is her leap in the singles ranking; she started the year outside the top 120 and is now #36.

Qinwen made it so far on the back of a singles title from the ITF and Challenger circuit and a quarterfinal result in the Canadian Open. Besides this, Zheng also reached the mid-rounds in the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

In Tokyo, she further staked her claim by beating the top seed Paula Badosa 6-3, 6-2 and later, Veronika Kudermetova in the quarters 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(3). Her other wins came over Misaki Doi and Claire Liu.

Over the season, she defeated well-known players like Simona Halep, Sloane Stephens, Bianca Andreescu, Ons Jabeur, and Jelena Ostapenko.

Samsonova v Zheng Prediction and Tip

This match can go either way. Samsonova is the odds-on favourite, but Zheng has repeatedly punched above her weight. Expect a fierce, entertaining encounter.
