Begu Comes in as Bucharest Champion

Irina-Camelia Begu comes into the tournament having won two consecutive clay court tournaments. The third seed won the WTA 250 title in Palermo by beating Lucia Bronzetti in the final in July.

Last week, playing on clay for the first time since that WTA title, she won the WTA125 in Bucharest by defeating Réka Luca Jani in the title clash.

The Romanian is 18-4 overall on clay in 2022, which also includes a Round of 16 finish at the French Open.

Ranked No. 33, the 32-year-old Begu is 10-0 on clay from her last 10 matches. She will be looking to keep the streak going in Parma, where she is one of the contenders for the title.

Begu is a five-time champion from nine WTA finals, and has featured in one tour-level final this year. She will be aiming to reach another in Parma.

Tomova Comes in as Budapest Finalist

Facing Begu in the opener is another player who comes into the tournament in solid form.

Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova is 41-28 overall this season and she played in the final of the WTA 125 in Budapest on Sunday, only to finish runner-up to Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch.

A semifinalist in Bastad and also a finalist at an ITF tournament on clay, Tomova is 21-14 on the surface.

Last week Tomova ousted Jasmine Paolini in the opening round in Budapest and then defeated Julia Grabher, Anna Karolína Schmiedlová and Oceane Dodin respectively to reach her maiden WTA 125 final. But she lost a close three-set contest to Korpatsch.

Ranked No. 109, the 27-year-old will be hoping to build on the Budapest showing in Parma but she faces a very tough opponent up front, and will have her task cut out in the opener.
