Irina-Camelia Begu advanced to the second round in Parma after her opening round opponent Viktoriya Tomova retired while trailing 7-5, 5-1.
The World no. 33 converted 6 of 14 break points and saved 3 of 6 to go past the world no. 93.
The Romanian, who is the third seed in Parma, has come into the tournament as the WTA 125 champion in Bucharest. She has been very good on clay this year and Tuesday’s win improved her to 19-4 on the surface.
She won her only WTA title of the season on clay, beating Lucia Bronzetti in the Palermo final. She has featured in three tour-level quarterfinals this season, which includes the title in Parma, a semifinal finish in St Petersburg and a quarterfinal finish in Melbourne Summer Set 2. Paoletti Knocks out Lee
Local hope Matilde Paoletti ousted Romanian qualifier Gabriela Lee in the opening round to win her first tour-level match of the season.
Paoletti, who had qualified for the main draw in Palermo, is featuring in just her second tour-level main draw event. She has done well at the lower level tournaments and Tuesday’s win improved her to 16-7 on clay and 16-8 overall.
The Italian, ranked no. 366th, came back from an early break down to win the first set. She got an early break in the second, but Lee fought back with a double break to draw level. But the Italian dominated the third set. She dropped just two points on her serve and six on return to bagel the World no. 150 and win the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.
