Fernando Verdasco began his Sofia Open campaign with a straight sets win over a struggling world no. 37 Nikoloz Basilashvili.
Ranked no. 116th in the world, Verdasco hasn’t accumulated many wins on the tour this year, but the 38-year-old will be happy with the start in Sofia which improved him to 5-10 on the tour in 2022.
Basilashvili had taken a 3-5 lead in the first set, but Verdasco broke back immediately and evened things up to force the tiebreak. The Spaniard then dominated the tiebreak to close out the first set.
In the second set, it was Verdasco who got an early break. Basilashvili broke back in the middle of the set, but the Spaniard broke one more time at the end of the set to clinch the match 7-6 (7-1), 7-5.
A seven time champion from 23 finals on the tour, Verdasco is aiming to reach a third quarterfinal of the season, following Buenos Aires and Estoril.

Vukic Knocks Out Fognini
Aleksandar Vukic made a solid start to the tournament as he battled past Fabio Fognini in a tough two set contest.
The match that lasted an hour and 55 minutes saw the Australian win 84% points on his first serve. He also saved 4 of 6 break points and converted 3 of 11 to win 7-6 (13-11), 7-5.
Vukic saved as many as five break points in the first set tiebreak, while converting his third. The second set was competitive as well as Vukic came back from a break down to send the Italian packing.
The 26-year-old improved his season record to 5-4 on the tour following the win. He is 16-16 across levels and had captured the Bangalore Challenger title this year.
He will be aiming to reach his second quarterfinal of the season after his run to the last eight in Adelaide-2.
