Schwartzman Looking to Reach First QF on Hard Court in 2022

World no. 17 Diego Schwartzman will begin his Tel Aviv campaign in the second round after the third seed received a first round bye.

The Argentine has delivered results on clay this year, but has struggled on other surfaces. Currently he is on a three-match losing streak. After going down to Frances Tiafoe in the third round of the U.S. Open, Schwartzman lost his Davis Cup match against Sweden and his Laver Cup match to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

A four-time champion on the tour, Schwartzman is 9-8 on the hard courts this year. The Argentine has not reached a single hard court quarterfinal this year but that could change in Tel Aviv if he wins on Thursday.

Schwartzman’s best this year came on clay. The 30-year-old finished runner-up at the Argentina Open and the Rio Open and also reached the semifinals of Cordoba and Barcelona.

Rinderknech Survives Scare

World no. 58 Arthur Rinderknech escaped elimination in the first round, fighting back from a set down to beat qualifier Marius Copil.

Rinderknech wasn’t broken in the match as he saved both the break points that he faced, but he lost a close tiebreaker in the first set. The Frenchman, however, fought back over the next two sets breaking the World no. 350 once in each of the last two sets to win 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3.

The 27-year-old had reached his first ever ATP final at the Adelaide International this year. He also reached the semifinals in Doha but hasn’t done much on the tour since then. However, he did reach two Challenger finals this year, winning in Poznan and finishing runner-up in Vancouver.

Rinderknech was a quarterfinalist in Metz last week. Can he do it again this week?
