Cilic Gets a Free Pass to the Semis

Second seed Marin Cilic advanced to the semifinal after receiving a walkover from British qualifier Liam Broady in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The Croatian, ranked no. 16 in the world, is into his fifth semifinal of the season. But the 20-time tour-level champion is yet to reach a final this year.

The 33-year-old had reached back-to-back semifinals in the two Adelaide tournaments in January. He also made it to the final four at the French Open and in Queen’s.

Cilic has been particularly good on hard courts, where the World no. 16 has a 17-10 record in 2022. He had begun his Tel Aviv campaign with a comeback win over Dominic Thiem in the second round.

Cilic had lost the first set in the tiebreak, but he dominated the next two sets for a 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-4 victory in two hours and 44 minutes.

He has played just one match leading up to the semifinals. Can he get another win on Saturday to reach the 36th final of his career.

Lestienne Stuns Fourth Seed

Frenchman Constant Lestienne reached the first ATP semifinal of his career after he knocked out fourth seed Maxime Cressy in a nail-biting quarterfinal on Friday.

After being outplayed in the opening set tiebreak, Lestienne came right back into the contest by getting the solitary break in the second set. Neither player got broken in the third before the world no. 68 edged past the World no. 34 in the tiebreak.

The two-hour-and-27-minute win saw Cressy serve 28 aces to Lestienne’s 9. The Frenchman also hit 23 fewer winners than Cressy’s 54. But overall he won the crucial moments. While he served both the break points that the American held, he converted the only one that he had in the match in the second set.

This was a third straight win for Lestienne over a player ranked higher than him. He had begun his campaign with a straight sets win over seventh seed and World no. 51 Adrian Mannarino. He followed that win with another straight sets win, this time over World no. 54 Emil Ruusuvuori

Lestienne has won three Challenger titles from five finals this year. Can he reach his first ever tour-level final on Saturday.

Cilic v Lestienne Prediction and Tip

Cilic will be wary of Lestienne’s form. But the vastly experienced Croat will be the favourite to win this match.
