Fritz Survives Round One

As dramatic as ‘survives sound’ it wasn’t really that dramatic. Yes, Fritz did play three sets against Duckworth but most of that was his doing. When he was focused and in the match, he completely smashed Duckworth. The second set that he lost was a tiebreak set where he completely fell apart and lost focus.

Too many errors and too much rushing lost him the tiebreak 2-7 but he rallied in superb fashion to win the final set 6-1. It’s been that kind of tennis lately for Fritz as hes’ either brilliant or quite poor. The perfect example of that was his match against Norrie in the Davis Cup.

He dominated it until he lost focus and he ended up losing the match. Still, it’s been a great year for him overall with a 38-17 record and 21-8 on hard courts. His recent form has been a bit wonky but he’s still extremely talented and very confident in his abilities.

Solid Tennis From Moriya

Hiroki Moriya faced a compatriot in round one and it was a very competitive match with Moriya prevailing in two sets. He will certainly need to bring some of that fight against Fritz and perhaps he’ll get rewarded. Fritz is a very streaky player and at times he can get nervous and lose the compass for a while.

It’s hard to imagine that Moriya truly can win this match as he would need a very poor effort from Fritz and a superb display from himself. There is just too much of a talent gap between the players and Fritz rarely loses confidence in his play, even if things go badly for him.

Moriya has had a solid season with a 24-23 score however he is still a lucky loser who got very luck to enter the main draw here. He’s not the best Japanese player out there and he certainly hasn’t played that well recently so this is a very tough ask of him.

Fritz v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

Fritz should cruise in this one comfortably. There is just not much to add, he’s a much better tennis player.
