Ekaterina Alexandrova v Tereza Martincova Head to Head

Alexandrova leads 3-2. The Russian won their most recent matches in St Petersburg in 2019 and 2021, both in straight sets.

Alexandrova Takes Out the Fifth Seed

Korea Open champion Ekaterina Alexandrova extended her unbeaten run to seven matches as she knocked out fifth seed Daria Kasatkina in the second round of the Ostrava Open on Thursday.

Alexandrova, who had beaten Jelena Ostapenko for the title in Seoul, had begun her Ostrava campaign with a three-set win over Victoria Azarenka.

She kept her winning run going against the fellow Russian in the second round, demolishing her in the first set and then holding her off in the second set tiebreak for a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) victory.

Kasatkina didn’t hold serve even once in the first set. She did put up a fight in the second, going up a break twice, but Alexandrova got those breaks back on both the occasions, before racing to victory in the tiebreak.

Alexandrova, who also won the Rosmalen Open in June, is 34-16 so far this year. Thanks to her consistency she has peaked to a career-high ranking of No. 21, which she attained on September 26. If she extends her streak by another match, she will reach her fifth semifinal of the season.

Martincova Advances as Kontaveit Retires

Local hope Terezza Martincova advanced to the last eight after defending champion and the third seed Annet Kontaveit retired from the contest in the second set due to a back injury.

Martinocva took the first set in the tiebreak and broke the Estonian in the very first game of the second before the latter decided to quit. Although the win didn’t come in a complete match, the victory over the World no. 3 is still Martincova’s first over a top 10 player.

The World no. 78, who knocked out Jil Teichmann in two tiebreaks in the first round, improved to 22-24 across levels following her Thursday’s victory. She will be playing in her third quarterfinal of the season. While she lost in the last eight stage in St. Petersburg, she was a semifinalist in Nottingham.

She is one of the three Czech players still in hunt for the title. Can she get closer to it on Friday?
