Daniil Medvedev v Novak Djokovic Head to Head

Djokovic leads 6-4 head-to-head. It will be their first meeting in 2022.

Last year, they met thrice, all in finals, with the Serb winning the Australian Open and the Paris Masters titles, while the Russian won the U.S. Open title.

On hard courts, Djokovic leads 5-3.

Medvedev Demolishes Another Opponent

Daniil Medvedev is in cruise control in Astana. After making quick work of his first two opponents, the Russian demolished World no. 21 Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets on Friday.

The world no. 4 was on top of his game right from the start of the contest and needed just 30 minutes to win the first set. He had broken the Spaniard thrice in the opening set, dropping just two points on his serve and 12 on return.

He continued to dictate terms in the second set as well, racing to a 4-0 lead before being broken for the first time in the match, but he recovered quickly and won the next two games to clinch the contest 6-1, 6-1.

Medvedev had struck six aces in the match and won 88% points on his first serve.

The second seed, who lost in his first match at the Moselle Open, has been decimating his opponents in Kazakhstan. He had begun his campaign with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas, and then, in round 2, he outplayed Emil Ruusuvuori 6-3, 6-2.

Medvedev, who improved to 40-14 this season, is chasing his second title of the season. He has featured in four finals this year, but Los Cabos remains the only place where he tasted success. He finished runners-up at the Australian Open, and ’s-Hertogenbosch and Halle Opens.

Can the 14-time tour-level champion get a win over the 21-time Grand Slam winner and enter the 27th final of his career?

Djokovic Rolls Past Khachanov

Just like Medvedev, Novak Djokovic, too, has displayed terrific form at the Astana Open. After trouncing his first two opponents, the World no. 7 handed Karen Khachanov a 6-4, 6-3 drubbing in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The Serb, who wasn’t broken in the first two matches, was broken once by the Russian on Friday, but that was the only blemish during another convincing performance.

Djokovic began the match well, quickly taking a 3-0 lead, but the World no. 18 drew level by winning the next three games. The Serb, however, finished the set strongly, breaking the Russian one more time and going 1-0 up.

In the second set, Djokovic was on the money with his serve. He didn’t face a single break point and dropped just eight points on his serve. He got the solitary break in the fourth game which helped him ease to a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Djokovic had ousted Cristian Garín 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round and Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3, 6-1 in the second round.

The fourth seed had come into the tournament with a 28-6 season record behind him. He had won the Tel Aviv Open last week, and is currently on a seven-match win streak following the three wins in astana.

A win on Saturday will take Djokovic into his fifth final of the season. He won in Wimbledon and Rome in addition to Tel Aviv and finished runner-up in Belgrade. Can he keep the unbeaten run going and reach a 128th career final on Saturday?

Medvedev v Djokovic Prediction and Tip

Djokovic is in terrific form and has not dropped a set in the last seven matches. Medvedev too is in great touch, so expect this to be a blockbuster contest. However, the Serb has a superior head-to-head record and also has done well in the high pressure matches this season.

He may drop a set in the semifinal but eventually should reach a fifth final of the year.
