Garcia In Great Form

Seventh seed Caroline Garcia comes into the tournament with a 40-17 season record across levels.

The Frenchwoman has been exceptional since July and has gone 21-3 during this phase. However, she is currently on a two-match losing streak. After falling in the semifinal of the U.S. Open—which was her first-ever final four appearance at a Grand Slam—Garcia lost her opening match at the Tokyo Open.

She will look to overcome those two defeats in San Diego and get back to the form that saw her win the titles in Bad Homburg, Warsaw and Cincinnati this year.

Thanks to her terrific performances this season, the 28-year-old has climbed 64 places since the start of the season to reach her current ranking of no. 10.

Can she get back to winning ways with a first-round win in San Diego?

It’s Been a Stop-Start Season for Collins

This year’s Australian Open runner-up Danielle Collins will be playing in her first tournament since making the Round of 16 exit from the U.S. Open.

Collins is 15-9 overall during the injury-hit season and is 12-4 on hard courts.

The hard-hitting American, who was an Australian Open semifinalist in 2019, reached her maiden Grand Slam final in Melbourne this year by beating Iga Swiatek. However, she couldn’t win her maiden major title, falling to Ash Barty in the final.

Collins also made the quarterfinals in Miami, but missed the Indian Wells Open due to an injury. She didn’t have a good clay and grass seasons and then a neck injury kept her out of the tour before she returned to action at the U.S. Open. She comes back on the tour after a a month’s gap. Can she begin with a win?
