Kasatkina Has Been a Consistent Performer

She has been a consistent performer in 2022, but Daria Kasatkina will be a but concerned about her last two performances as she heads to San Diego.

Kasatkina, who peaked to a career high ranking of no. 9 in August, is currently ranked no. 11 in the world.

She reached her first two finals of the season in August and won both the titles in San Jose and Granby. But she made a surprise first round exit from the U.S. Open, after losing to Harriet Dart.

The Russian most recently played in Ostrava, winning the first round against Emma Raducannu, but falling in the second to Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Kasatkina, who was a semifinalist in Melbourne and Sydney, also reached the final four in Rome and Roland Garros. The six-time tour-level champion is 38-18 overall and 22-11 on hard courts.

Can she return to form in San Diego?

Fernandez Has Struggled on Return from Injury

Leylah Fernandez has had her moments this year, but the 20-year-old suffered a fractured foot during her maiden run to the quarterfinals of the French Open, and hasn’t had the same effect ever since coming back from the injury

The Canadian, who was extremely impressive in 2021, when she reached the final of the US Open, comes to San Diego with an 18-11 season record behind her.

Fernandez defended her Monterrey Open title earlier this year, reached the Round of 16 in Indian Wells and made it to the last eight at the French Open, before going down fighting to Martina Trevisan.

She missed the rest of clay and grass seasons and made a return in Toronto, where she won one and lost one. She made a first round exit from Cincinnati and could win just one round at the U.S. Open.

Can the feisty lefty, ranked no. 38 in the world, recapture her early season form and end the season on a high?

Kasatkina v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

Kasatkina has been in better form throughout the season and she has consistently made deep runs. Facing Fernandez first up is tricky, but given the Canadian’s recent form, Kasatkina will be the favourite to win this match.
