Auger-Aliassime Edges Out Otte

Top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime found himself in a spot of bother after a solid start to his opening match in Florence, but he finished the match on a strong note to defeat Oscar Otte in three and advance to the quarterfinal.

The Canadian needed two hours and 30 minutes to beat the German 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2. He got the solitary break in the first set and then squandered a 3-1 lead in the second set, allowing the world no. 55 to come back and take the set in the tiebreak.

Auger-Aliassime raised his game in the final set, breaking the German twice and closing out the contest.

This is the 13th time that the World no. 13 has made it to the last eight this year. He has a 42-25 season record and is aiming to win his second career title. He won his maiden title this season in Rotterdam. The 22-year-old also reached a 10th ATP final in Marseille but finished runner-up for a ninth time.

He will be looking to improve his 24-12 hard court record on Friday by reaching his fifth semifinal of the season.

Nakashima Eases Past Celikbilek

Eighth seed Brandon Nakashima rolled into the last eight with a comfortable win over Turkey’s Altug Celikbilek in round two.

The American, who had beaten Richard Gasquet 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round, needed just an hour and 15 minutes to dispatch the Turkish player 6-3, 6-4.

While Nakashima didn’t face a single break point in the first round match, he did face one in the second and couldn’t save it either, but he converted 3 of 5 break points.

The 29-year-old World no. 46 is 29-20 this season with the bulk of his wins coming on his preferred hard courts. He won his maiden career title in San Diego recently and can be a difficult player to contend with.

Can Nakashima upset the top seed and reach his second semifinal of the season?

Auger-Aliassime v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

What gives Auger-Aliassime the edge in this contest is his ability to go deep in tournaments on a consistent basis. Nakashima can be a tricky opponent, but the Canadian is the better player in this matchup and should make it to the semifinals.
